Auto Tech, Why Does My Car Battery Have Corrosion?

Exploring the Factors Behind Car Battery Corrosion

Corrosion on a car battery is a common issue, and it can occur for several reasons.

Chemical Reaction: Car batteries contain sulfuric acid, which is highly corrosive. When the acid interacts with the metal terminals (usually lead), it can cause a chemical reaction that produces corrosion. This corrosion is typically a white, greenish, or bluish powdery substance.

Overcharging: If your car's charging system overcharges the battery, it can lead to excessive hydrogen gas production. This gas can escape from the battery and react with the metal terminals, leading to corrosion.
Undercharging: On the flip side, if the battery is not fully charged, it may release sulfuric acid and lead sulfate deposits, which can also contribute to corrosion.

Environmental Factors: High humidity, exposure to road salt, and other environmental factors can accelerate the corrosion process. Moisture in the air can react with the sulfuric acid and lead to the formation of corrosion.
Age and Wear: Over time, the plastic casing and seals of a battery may deteriorate, allowing moisture to enter and contribute to corrosion. The battery terminals themselves can also corrode due to wear and tear.
